Bond Contracts Limited (BCL) was originally part of the Invercargill City Council and specialises in water services, cable installation, and waste collection. BCL has years of experience, an impeccable safety record, and strong relationships with customers throughout Southland. Paul du Mez

Paul du Mez

Paul has been the CEO of BCL since 2009, and Contracts Manager for four years before that. He oversees the three divisions of BCL and managed the company during its transition from part of the Invercargill City Council to a private company. Before working at BCL Paul gained experience in a number of roles such as fitter and turner, secondary school teacher, and business owner.

Paul has worked in Invercargill for many years and his well-established professional relationships are a testament to the high quality of his work. He’s proud of BCL because it’s positive workplace which provides valuable services to the community.

Paul enjoys the challenge of managing 60 staff, and problem-solving and other work with clients. Outside of work his hobbies include classic cars, following sport (especially rugby), and working on his portfolio of properties in Invercargill, Cromwell, and Wanaka.

Steven Bragg

Steven Bragg

Steven has been with BCL (then part of Invercargill City Council) since 1985 and has a wealth of experience in managing water, drainage, and cabling projects – he’s seen it all. As the Operations Manager, it’s Steven’s job to plan and manage contracts to ensure they’re completed successfully and on time.

He likes to work in the Southland region, as it means that teams can go home at night and still have time to pursue interests outside of work. Steven is an effective communicator and is skilled at matching teams to suitable jobs.

Steven is proud to work for BCL as it invests significant time and money into professional development, adherence to health and safety regulations, and quality assurance. He finds it rewarding to receive positive feedback from clients that reflect the effort and care put into the work done. Outside of work, Steven enjoys watching sports, taking part in quizzes, and exploring the outdoors with his dog and children.

Mark Simpson

Mark Simpson

Mark has been with BCL since 2016 as a Contracts Manager and is currently the Environmental Manager since mid 2019. Prior to BCL he has worked at the Southland District Council and Invercargill City Council. He has more than ten years’ experience in construction and civil engineering, as well as a Diploma in Engineering (Civil) from Otago Polytechnic.

He is enthusiastic about overcoming challenges to complete projects safely, on time, and to a high standard. This come through in his work philosophy – “Do it once, do it right.” At BCL in particular, he enjoys the varied technical work that BCL undertakes, and working with such motivated and skilled team members.

Mark is known for effective communication, quick thinking under pressure, and focus on health and safety procedures. When not working Mark likes to spend time with his family and boating on the Southern Lakes.

Chris Rooney

Chris Rooney

Chris has had a variety of roles within the company since starting as a young man in 1992. Just to name a few roles; a runner on the ash carts, sweep cleaning, truck driver, being part of the asphalt crew, leading hand at the Invercargill Transfer Station and now currently Environmental Supervisor/ Plant Manager.

Chris has seen a number of changes within the company during his employment with BCL. He has enjoyed the variety of challenges that have arisen in his current position including liaising with the diversity of today’s society and community.

Chris is your typical bloke - enjoys most sports but mainly rugby and motorsport. He also enjoys taking some time out and relaxing with his family.

Matt Johnson

Matt Johnson

Matt joined the BCL team in 2016 as a vacational labourer while studying for his Diploma in Civil Engineering at Otago Polytechnic. Matt worked on significant projects conducted by BCL during this time such as the Mataura Valley Milk dairy factory and Fonterra Dobby Farm irrigation project. Matt spent three years out in the field during his holiday breaks gaining a practical understanding of the civil construction industry.

Matt’s role changed to Contracts Manager in 2020 after completing his studies and has quickly demonstrated his ability and his enthusiasm for this industry. Putting all his learnings into action, Matt now works with local authorities and larger clients to deliver their infrastructure requirements.

Matt enjoys the close-knit team environment created within BCL and the variety of different projects which has allowed him to expand his horizons of civil engineering.

Outside of work Matt likes hunting and fishing and hanging out with friends and family.
